Russian Doll
Russian Doll 2009 Tales from the East series black, red, blue and green Biro drawing 42cm x 30cm
A representation of the iconic Russian doll or matryoshka. Inspired by a Russian doll in Jane's collection, featuring a hand painted image of Ivan Shishkin’s Morning in a Pine Forest 1889. This layered drawing includes imagery of Red Army soldiers fighting in Stalingrad and a self-portrait. The artwork reflects upon the brutalisation of young girls and women during WWII and the resulting consequences, particularly suicide and unwanted pregnancies. The drawing was created as a memorial to all female victims of sexual violence during conflict, a weapon of war still used today.
