'The Sideboard I', 2009 'Tales from the East' Series Black Biro Drawing 42cm x 30cm

This triptych portrays memories of a small child at play in a sideboard, within the safety of ‘home’, before the onset of war. It was inspired by the girl in the red coat from the film ‘Schindler’s List’, Steven Spielberg 1993 as she wanders through the Kraków Ghetto while it is being liquidated. Jane drew a portrait of her niece to highlight the indiscriminate nature of war and how it can affect ‘anyone’, to provoke understanding of loss by seeing victims as individuals and not statistics.
