'Russian Doll', 2009 'Tales from the East' Series Black, Red, Blue and Green Biro Drawing 42cm x 30cm

A representation of the iconic Russian doll. Inspired by a Russian doll in Jane's collection, featuring Ivan Shishkin’s ‘Morning in a Pine Forest’, 1889. The forest is layered with the image of Russian soldiers fighting their way through Stalingrad during WWII. This layered drawing includes imagery of Red Army soldiers fighting in Stalingrad and a self-portrait. The artwork reflects upon the brutalisation of young girls and women during WWII, the resulting consequences, particularly suicide and unwanted pregnancies and how this form of gender violence is still used during conflict today.
