'Russian Doll', 2009 'Tales from the East' Series Black, Red, Blue and Green Biro Drawing 42cm x 30cm

A representation of the iconic image of the Russian doll, Jane was inspired by her own Russian doll, painted with the tranquil scene of Ivan Shishkin’s ‘Morning in a Pine Forest’, 1889, one of Russia’s most popular paintings. The forest is layered with the image of Russian soldiers fighting their way through Stalingrad during WWII. This piece symbolises the brutalisation of many young girls and women, in revenge for brutal acts perpetrated by the German Army against Russian civilians, as the Red Army surged towards and through Germany. The consequences of such violations often resulted in suicide and unwanted pregnancies. A parallel is drawn by layering a self-portrait as part of the Russian Doll’s face, that no female or age group is exempt from crimes against women during conflict. At the very edge of the drawing appear the legs of a young girl.
